Bone Char Carbon Media – 5 lbs | Fluoride & Heavy Metal Reduction
Bone Char Carbon is a premium filtration media engineered for the reduction of fluoride, arsenic, radioactive particles, and heavy metals from water. Unlike standard activated carbon, bone char contains both a porous carbon surface and a hydroxyapatite lattice structure, delivering powerful multi-stage adsorption and ion exchange.
This 5 lb bag of bone char media is ideal for small water treatment systems, point-of-use filters, or pilot testing before scaling to larger tanks.
Key Features & Benefits
-
✅ Highly Effective Fluoride Removal – Reduces or eliminates fluoride from drinking water.
-
✅ Heavy Metal Adsorption – Targets arsenic, lead, mercury, silver, aluminum, manganese, and more.
-
✅ Organic Contaminant Reduction – Removes THMs, pesticides, herbicides, chlorine, and chloramines.
-
✅ Radioactive Particle Reduction – Effective against select radionuclides and isotopes.
-
✅ Natural Water Balance – Helps maintain alkalinity in treated water.
How Bone Char Works
Bone Char is produced by high-temperature calcination (“dry distillation”) of cattle bones at ~1000°C in an oxygen-free environment. The process creates a unique material composed of:
-
~90% Hydroxyapatite (Apatite II)
-
~10% Elemental Carbon
-
Trace carbonate compounds
Contaminant removal happens through three mechanisms:
-
Ion Substitution – Fluoride and heavy metals replace calcium or carbonate within the lattice.
-
Surface Adsorption – Both carbon and hydroxyapatite surfaces capture contaminants.
-
Phosphate Precipitation – Free phosphate forms stable compounds with impurities, locking them away.
This triple action makes bone char one of the most effective media for fluoride, arsenic, and radionuclide removal.
Applications
-
Drinking water filters (under-sink, countertop, gravity systems)
-
Whole-house and point-of-entry fluoride reduction systems
-
Laboratory, industrial, and specialty water treatment setups
-
Sugar refining and other purification industries
